After democracy returned to Argentina in the mid-1980s, the cultural tradition of social tango dancing had a remarkable renaissance. Leading the way was a dedicated group of men and women dancers — the kings and queens of the milonga, the late night dance halls of Buenos Aires. Because of them, social tango dancing didn't just survive, it thrived and spread around the globe. Chasing the Ghost explores their legacy, as age and infirmity have taken their toll.
For me tango is everything. It's strength, love, happiness, sadness sometimes.
— Julio
As of now, we have made multiple filming trips to Buenos Aires, where we shot extensive dance footage in the milongas, performance venues and in private sessions. We have over 40 filmed interviews with dancers, teachers, tango historians and DJs. We have done additional filming in Denver and Asheville, including tango festivals and additional interviews with teachers and instructors.
We are currently seeking funding to complete production and move into the post-production phase. Once funded, we will return to Buenos Aires and several American locations to complete the interviews.
We then will move into post-production editing, scriptwriting, narrator and narration recording, graphics design and creation, photography photoshop work, digital video editing, color correction, audio postproduction (sweetening, FX, etc.), translation and on-screen text creation, and the ultimate on-line edit to prep the film for distribution.
As the filming involves both English and Spanish interviews, we will create multiple language versions of the film using subtitles. Our initial plan is to have versions in English, Spanish, Italian, German, and French, with the option to add other languages later.
